High School Parent Time: Family Matters - Week 3
LETTER FROM JAKE

Dear Parents,

Hi everyone! I first want to thank you for taking not only the time to read through this parent time, but also for taking the time to have these intentional conversations with your students and your family. I know I have met many of you, but I also am aware that I have not met everyone quite yet. My name is Jake Murphy, and I am so excited to be able to serve you and your family as the High School Minister, under the direction of the Next Generation Ministry here at FBC.
A quick blurb about my family - My wife, Paige, and I have been married for four years, and we have two kids, Mattison, and Judah. I am a native to LaGrange, and Paige is from the Philadelphia area. Paige is a teacher at Long Cane Middle School. One of our favorite things that we do together as a family is play board games and card games, including Catan and Phase 10.
What I really love about this series, Family Matters, and what the idea for bottom line is for Week 3, is that we are better together, and that we need more people in our lives than our family. Family is awesome and it is definitely an institution and a blessing given to us by God, but it also matters for our family that we are plugged into the larger family of God, which for us is the Body of Christ - the Church. Something that I think back to often from my childhood is how many adults, my parents’ friends, were praying for me and over me, and how often I was able to see other people than just my family live out their faith outside of church. Some may need people in their lives other than family because family is not present, and others may need to open their families to include those who need family that are lonely or isolated.
As you get ready to enter into some discussions this week with your family and with your student, take a few minutes and read Hebrews 10:24-25, and reflect on the people who you and your family have in your life that are like family to you. Our prayer for you is that you will be able to talk with your student and help them identify people in their life that will be for them, celebrate with them, and ultimately help them mature in their Faith and grow in their walk with Jesus.

LESSON FOLLOW-UP
As you prepare for conversations with your student, here are a few questions that can help you get the conversation started:
1. What did you hear tonight?
2. Do you have people in your life that are like family to you, that are not a part of our immediate family?
3. Do you think those people are helping you grow? Or are they keeping you from growing?
4. Do your friends:  1. Care about you? 2. Look out for your life, future, and well being? 3. See potential in your life?
5. Do you: 1. Care about your friends? 2. Look out for their life, future, and well being? 3. See potential in your friend(s) life?
6. What is something that you can do to widen your circle, and choose a circle that will help you grow?
7. Read 1 Samuel 18:1-3… Is there something that we can do, or stop doing, that will help you find or maintain friendships like Jonathan and David?

These are just some suggested ideas! The purpose of this conversation is to have your student thinking about the people they are allowing to influence them, and taking steps to make sure that their friends and mentors, who are outside of the immediate family, are helping them grow in their walk with Jesus!
